A chimney works because hot flue gas is lighter than the air around it, and rises. Anything that weakens that column, or gives the house a stronger pull in the opposite direction, sends smoke into the room instead. There are five usual culprits, and they are all measurable.
Flue-to-opening ratio
The flue area should be roughly a tenth of the fireplace opening area for a masonry fireplace. Oversized openings — very common in the large custom fireplaces built across North Texas in the eighties and nineties — overwhelm the flue. The fix is usually reducing the opening rather than enlarging the flue.
Chimney height and termination
A chimney needs adequate height above the roof to establish draft, and it must clear nearby roof planes and trees. Homes with steep or complex rooflines frequently have a chimney that was built to the minimum and now sits in a wind shadow. Extending the flue or fitting a wind-directional cap solves a surprising share of cases.
Smoke chamber geometry
Stepped, unparged corbelled brick creates turbulence exactly where smoke needs to accelerate. Parging the chamber smooth is a genuine draft improvement, not a cosmetic one.
House pressure
Tight modern construction plus a powerful range hood, bath fans and a dryer can put a house under enough negative pressure to reverse the chimney entirely. If your fireplace behaves until the kitchen fan comes on, this is your answer, and the fix is make-up air rather than masonry.
Obstruction
The simplest and most overlooked. Heavy creosote narrows the flue, and a nest blocks it outright. Before anyone recommends structural work, the flue should be swept and camera-scanned — sometimes that is the entire repair.

Smoke rolls out when you light it
The classic. Usually the flue cannot establish draft before the fire produces smoke.
Cold air pours down all winter
Reverse flow. A top-sealing damper stops it and saves conditioned air year round.
It only smokes with the kitchen fan on

Smoke on windy days only
Wind shadow from the roofline or nearby trees. A directional cap usually resolves it.
Have to crack a window to burn
A workaround for negative pressure that tells you the house needs make-up air.
Fire will not stay lit
Weak draft starving the fire of combustion air, often alongside an oversized opening.
Measure it, do not guess at it.

Fireplace opening, flue area, chimney height and termination clearances are recorded and compared against the ratios they should meet.

A scan rules out obstruction and buildup before any structural cause is considered.

We run the exhaust appliances and observe the fireplace, because a pressure problem is not a chimney problem.
Correct the Actual Cause
Opening reduction, flue extension, a directional or top-sealing cap, chamber parging, or make-up air — whichever the measurements point to.

How much does it cost to fix a smoking fireplace?
There is no single answer because there is no single cause. A sweep costs one thing, extending a flue another. We measure the system first, then give you a free written estimate for the specific correction.
Can you fix a fireplace that has always smoked?
Usually, yes. A fireplace that has smoked since the day it was built almost always has a measurable design fault — an oversized opening, a short chimney or an unparged chamber. Those are correctable.
Is a smoking fireplace dangerous?
Smoke in the room means combustion gases in the room, and that includes carbon monoxide. It should be treated as a safety issue rather than an inconvenience, and the fireplace should not be used until it is diagnosed.
Will a taller chimney fix it?
Sometimes, and it is the right answer when height or a wind shadow is the measured cause. It is the wrong answer when the real problem is an oversized opening, which is why measuring first matters.
What is make-up air?
A dedicated path for outside air to enter the house so exhaust appliances are not pulling it down the chimney. In tight modern DFW homes it is frequently the actual fix.
