Most fireplaces installed in Dallas–Fort Worth since the eighties are prefabricated — a factory-built metal firebox with refractory cement panels lining the floor, back and sides. Those panels are not decoration. They are what stands between the fire and the metal shell, and behind that shell sits wood framing with only a few inches of clearance.
Prefabricated fireplaces are listed and tested as complete assemblies. That listing assumes intact panels. Once a panel cracks through or erodes to a fraction of its original thickness, the firebox no longer performs the way it was tested to, and the manufacturer's own instructions call for replacement rather than repair.
The measurement that decides it
The industry benchmark is simple: a crack you can lay a US nickel into on edge — roughly one-sixteenth of an inch — means the panel needs replacing. The same applies to erosion deeper than about a quarter of the panel's thickness, and to any crack that goes fully through. We measure rather than eyeball it, and we photograph what we measure.
Why patching is the wrong instinct
Refractory patch compound is sold everywhere and it is genuinely useful for hairline surface work. It does not restore a cracked panel's structural or thermal performance, and a patched crack reopens because the underlying panel is still moving. Worse, a filled crack hides progression — the next inspection sees smooth cement rather than a fault that has widened.
Matching matters more than people expect
Panels are model-specific. Superior, Heatilator, Majestic, Marco and the rest all used different dimensions, and a universal panel cut to fit is not a listed replacement. We identify the fireplace from its data plate and source panels that match the unit. Where the model is long discontinued and no listed panel exists, we tell you that plainly rather than improvising — sometimes the honest answer is a firebox replacement, and you deserve to hear it before spending money.

Can a cracked panel just be patched?
Not once the crack reaches the replacement threshold. Patch compound restores appearance, not thermal or structural performance, and it hides the fault from the next inspection.
Is it safe to use the fireplace with a cracked panel?
We would not, and neither would the manufacturer. The panels are what keep fire away from the metal shell and the framing behind it. Stop using it until it has been looked at.
What if my fireplace model is discontinued?
Sometimes listed panels are still available through the parts chain, and sometimes they are not. If no correct panel exists we will tell you, rather than fitting something that voids the listing.
How long does the job take?
The replacement itself is usually a single visit once the correct panels are in hand. Sourcing is what sets the timeline, particularly on older units.
